Biography

Eros Renzetti (Rome, 1965) discovered drawing early on and trained at the Istituto Statale d’Arte in Rome, where he designed jewelry. From 1979, he entered the orbit of Fabrizio Clerici, becoming his assistant, and met Leonor Fini—two decisive encounters for his idea of painting. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts (set design, 1986–90), he exhibited regularly: from a solo show at the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro to the 6th Cairo Biennale, and later a solo exhibition at JFK in New York. In the early 2000s, he developed the visionary “knights” series and published his first monograph; this was followed by projects on Cocteau and de Chirico, participation in the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2011), and a monograph for Damiani. Between 2012 and 2016, he alternated between solo and group exhibitions (Lucha Libre, La rètina lucente), also working on masks and costumes. From 2017 to 2024, he presented Metamorphosis in Forte dei Marmi and returned to shows in Florence and Rome; projects on Clerici (GNAM) and the Fini–Clerici dialogue (Mart) cemented his profile as both artist and interpreter of Clerici and Fini’s legacy. In 2024, he presented a project on Federigo Tozzi in Siena.

The most recent phase moves towards a visionary figuration: the figure remains central but undergoes transformation, retaining the hallmarks of the Profiles of Knights—sharp profiles, hieratic postures, plastic tension—which now shift into hybrid bodies. The subjects take on humanoid features, dressed in fashionable attire; they have glass eyes and an aura of apparition. They are surrounded by environments built like sets: pink stands, lacquer-red stairs and walls, golden inserts—a scenographic vocabulary that establishes distance and artifice. This “metaphysical divertissement” is updated with the paraphernalia of the present: swimming pools, outdoor furnishings, sports equipment, and everyday objects that shift the imagery from elsewhere into contemporary daily life. Sunlit bodies, exposed musculature, and references to fashion photography enter the scene as visual devices: glamour and artifice are not mere decoration, but critical tools to question desire, the representation of identity, and the commodification of the body. The result is a painting that is technically classical yet iconographically contemporary.
