What is the theatre for the city? Since always, since Periclean from ancient Athens, the theatre has been the foundation for citizenship, where you forged the values and morality of an entire community that actively participated both as a spectator and as an actor, where “democracy” was consolidated. A place dedicated to self-awareness and belonging, local culture, far more important than agora. Cesena has always been the perfect venue for theatrical performances.
At first the Spada theatre (on the first floor of the building) and then the neoclassical Alessandro Bonci theatre, designed by Vincenzo Ghinelli from Senigallia (Montescudo 1792 Senigallia-1871), which opened on August 15th, 1846. Unfortunately, we do not have photographs or portraits of him except the one done by the architect-sculptor Ilario Fioravanti. Since 1846 the Bonci theatre has been the place for a number of significant events that have given way, among others, to two “local” internationally renowned companies: the Valdoca theatre and Socìetas “Raffaello Sanzio”. Among the various shows hosted on the Bonci stage some pictures were selected. The seven invited artists – PAOLA BABINI (Ravenna 1962), MORENO BONDI (Carrara 1959), PAOLA CAMPIELLI (Longiano 1948), DANIELE MASINI (Forlì 1951), CARLO RAVAIOLI (Coccolia [Ravenna] 1954), Luca PIOVACCARI (Cesena, 1965), EROS RENZETTI (Rome, 1965) – were asked to reinterpret them, with their style and their artistic sensitivity. So, in a real “short-circuit”, it is now offered – together with the paintings as a “tribute in homage” in a synchronic and diachronic dialogue between figurative art and scenic art, memory of a common “visual” root of theatre and art, without forgetting that special “numerological” dimension that the anniversary offers.
The exhibition ends with a tribute to ILARIO FIORAVANTI (Cesena 1922 – Savignano sul Rubicone 2012).
During the exhibition period there will be some side events dedicated to the presentation of books (monologues, poems, philosophical musings and more) – published for the occasion – which will be presented in the Morellini room of the Bonci theatre.
The catalogue (IL VICOLO publisher) documents all the works of the invited artists and the selected photographs – for which a substantial number of shots by architect-photographer Gian Paolo Senni, exhibited – the institutional and critical essays, a signature contribution by the architect Elisabetta Vasumi Roveri that summarises the historical events of the “glorious” Alessandro Bonci theatre, and a thought for the poet-playwright Fabrizio Parrini.
